The New Medium

Released May 4, 2023

Within newness there is inherent optimism as much as precarity.

As an exhibition that firmly foots its way along the tight rope of a dichotomous relationship between the two opposing forces, The New Medium is intentional in being an emboldened statement of African optimism and an antidote to worn out narratives historically pinned on the continent. By cannonizing and validating artistic expressions through the lens of present and future histories, a mosaic of individual truths is revealed to storify both South Africa’s and the global socio political contexts. The psychic murk and grime dredged up in the process is a series of works that marry the innovation of digital art with the richness of story. Each of the pieces in this exhibition showcases the incredible skill, timelessness, imagination, and technical prowess of the artists who created them. From abstract compositions to stunning portraiture, thought-provoking political statements to playful pop culture references, the artworks offer unique perspectives and are an invitation that beckons authentic engagement.

Behind The New Medium is also the relational aspect between USURPA as a decentralised-NFT focused platform and the agency afforded to the group of artists by and centered as the new medium itself. We hope that this exhibition will inspire and engage you, and that it will encourage you to explore the exciting and rapidly evolving world of African digital art. Whether you are a seasoned collector or a curious art lover, we invite you to immerse yourself in this vibrant and dynamic medium, and to discover the extraordinary beauty and power of art informed by African future thought.
