One of my ultimate goals in the NFT space is to create fully on-chain evolving artwork that is not only driven by external data, but actually incorporates that data into itself. Every collection that I’ve released so far has been an iteration in process leading toward that goal. The two pieces in this collection are the result of what came from the initial steps of my most recent iteration. My past works have often visually referenced cryptocurrency and have used on-chain price data to alter their appearance. They’ve also used the crypto/nft markets as a metaphor - their volatility, highs, and lows have often paralleled my journey in this space. The most recent bear market has been the perfect reflection of the hurdles that I’ve run into this past year in reaching my goals for my work.
“One Step Back” contains two pieces: The first, “The Persistence of Currency I”, is an image I created as I would if I were creating a traditional painting. The second, “The Persistence of Currency II” is another version of the same image, painstakingly recreated as an SVG (the format served up by most contracts that support fully on-chain works). My hope is that I’ll be able to use what I’ve learned over the last year to create a visually compelling piece (as close to this one as possible) which is driven by and actually includes the price data in the actual work, all while existing completely on chain. While neither of these are dynamic or exist fully on chain, they’re meant to be the “One step back” that precedes the “Two steps forward”...
