Goh Beng Kwan
Goh Beng Kwan (b. 1937, Medan, Sumatra), is a key second-generation Singapore artist, widely recognised for his contributions to the Singapore art scene with his daring abstract collage works that utilise a myriad of found materials from his surroundings.
Goh has exhibited extensively around the world, with his first solo exhibition held at the Ruth Sherman Gallery in 1965. He has also exhibited in other parts of the United States, China, as well as around Southeast Asia, throughout his career. Widely included in esteemed art collections, Goh Beng Kwan’s works have been acquired by various organisations such as the National Gallery Singapore, the Singapore Changi Airport, United Overseas Bank, the Bank of America, Deutsche Bank, and the Westin Hotel, to name a few. A number of his commissioned works are also on public display at the Conrad Centennial Hotel, International Plaza, the Singapore Turf Club, as well as the Punggol MRT Station.
Awarded the Cultural Medallion in 1989, in commendation of his artistic achievements, Goh has also received many other accolades recognising the unique beauty of his works. This includes the first prize at the inaugural UOB Painting of the Year Competition (1982), first prize at the Australia Business Council and Australia High Commission Art Awards (1984), and the silver medal at the Salon des Artists Francais (1985).
