33 presents “As Day Turns Night,” a collection of works by Michael Callas, a Los Angeles based painter. In this collection, Callas utilizes two static images as well as one dynamic to play with different colorways with the intention of giving them completely unique and distinct feelings. Callas draws upon the primal nature of the relationship between day and night and the different emotions both evoke.
Michael Callas is a Los Angeles based visual artist known for his large-scale architectural paintings. He was raised in Southern California, where he started his career in the early 2010s after leaving architectural school. Callas’ process begins with a digital drawing done on an iPad. He then uses this rendering to create the physical painting. Callas’ paintings consist exclusively of spray paint and precise stencil work: intricately produced through a rigorous process of drafting, mapping, and hand-cutting individually cut templates before being transposed onto canvas with spray paint. Callas creates a surface that is uniform and rich in color. His unique process and works have captured worldwide acclaim.
