Renowned photographer Abelardo Morell has received a number of awards and grants, which include a Guggenheim fellowship in 1994 and an Infinity Award in Art from ICP in 2011. In November 2017, he received a Lucie Award for achievement in fine art. His work has been collected and shown in many galleries, institutions, and museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of American Art, the Metropolitan Art Museum in New York, The Chicago Art Institute, The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, The Houston Museum of Art, The Boston Museum of Fine Art, The Victoria & Albert Museum and several other museums in the United States and abroad.
On a new endeavor to explore the shifting world of Digital Fine Art I’m trying something new: NFTs. I want to see if I can reach new audiences with work I made during COVID, so I am introducing “Down the Rabbit Hole” as a way to experiment with the building blocks of Web3. After waiting until there were more carbon-efficient ways to make NFTs, the adventurer in me (like Alice) is ready to explore this new opportunity. I’m hoping to reach new audiences who may not know my work while embracing the unknown with hopeful expectations. For 30 years, I taught at the only state-supported art school in the U.S.A. My hope is that, if these NFTs appeal, I will release others with portions of proceeds going to help fund first-generation art students at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design.
