About "We Built the House"
"We Built the House" is a series of impossible architecture illustrations. Impossible architecture refers to architectural designs and structures that appear to defy the laws of physics, gravity, or common sense. These designs often feature optical illusions, impossible shapes, and surreal imagery that challenge our perception of space and reality.
While impossible architecture may not be practical or feasible for real-world construction, it can inspire new ways of thinking about space and design, and can encourage us to question our assumptions about the built environment. As such, it has become a fascinating area of exploration for artists, architects, and designers alike, offering endless possibilities for creative expression and innovation.
This series consists of three artworks, created in November 2022, digitally hand drawn.
About Tommy Chandra
Tommy Chandra is an artist from Indonesia that specializes in vector illustration and has been creating since 2008.
His journey in art began as he searched for something new and exciting to break up what can often be the mundanity of everyday life. His works encapsulate feelings of awe and wonder through various color palettes, shapes, and subjects – often including human figures, animals, fictional beings, and architectural structures. Some of the artist’s greatest inspirations include Charley Harper and M.S. Escher.
As a result of his dedicated pursuit of the arts, Chandra has worked with Google, becoming its first Indonesian doodle artist in 2014, also providing calendar art for the region. The artist has also garnered a variety of notable collectors and has had his work exhibited by Tezos at the Artmoments Jakarta event in 2022.
For Chandra, the main goal is to continue pursuing the freedom of expression found in his work, with an eventual goal of having his art displayed in acclaimed global contemporary museums next to other great artists.
