Final Frontier Chapter I: Mars Open Edition by Dr. Scott Bolton

Released Sep 13, 2022

ABOUT THE COLLECTION

This scientific art collection was created through a series of methods that combine scientific analysis and data processing with state of the art AI computer algorithms. Throughout the process, scientific integrity and accuracy are carefully maintained. Initial processing involves brightness and saturation adjustments, color space transformations, blurring, sharpening, high-passing, and noise filtering of raw space imagery. Retrieval of a generalized Lambertian illumination model from the raw images, identifies polynomials describing the mean brightness of an image in terms of mathematical functions containing both the solar incidence and the emission angles. The process produces flyby and fly-over movies by retrieving dynamical information from image sequences. Computational fluid dynamics (CDF) code controls distortion. Artificial cognition approaches include genetic algorithms among other proprietary scientific methods.

3D spacecraft component models are created from non-uniform rational basis spline (NURBS) mathematical using basis splines (B-splines) to represent curves and surfaces and polygonal modeling to manipulate edges, and vertices in simulated 3D space. 3D terrains are created by converting DEM (Digital Elevation Models) from scientific sources, and developed using specialized software, based on data gathered from NASA resources. A camera is added and flown over the 3D object, with atmosphere and star fields added using precision scientific analysis. Texture mapping is applied using noded based software.

3D terrain models are obtained from DTM (Digital Terrain Models) based on topographical maps using altimeter and radar data of the subject geodesic surface as well as stereo views when available. Multiple images are combined to create an orthomosaic dataset. Geometric errors and misalignments between adjacent image scenes are adjusted through a bundle block adjustment or image triangulation resulting in an accurate 3D rendering. Color is controlled by means of an elevation graph marking using a 3D camera. The process is achieved through a computer rendering farm made up of 25+ computers, with 128gigs of memory each and multiple processors per computer.
