Fear is not a new emotion for humans. It is known to shape societies throughout history. People who used to fear the clutches of predators today fear terror attacks, disease, death and economic disruption.
Media outlets, politicians and companies know and use the power of this emotion. One of the most important weapons in the hands of those who try to shape societies today is “sow fear”.
Fear, which was a force that strengthened solidarity in the past, is cutting people's contact with each other today. This draws fear to an uncontrollable dimension in society.
The fear factor tends to have negative consequences such as more violence, mental illness and trauma, social fragmentation and the disenfranchisement of minorities. As a result, authoritarian governments empowered by the police, erosion of legal rights, restriction of private life, social concerns and post-traumatic stress disorder have become widespread.
