BLUE - LAPIS LAZULI

It is estimated that the color blue has been in the world since 2.200 BC and, therefore, we find it incredible that it is the first artificial color in history.

In Egypt, evidence has been found of how they melted silica sand, calcite, copper ore and natron at about 850º. In this way they obtained pigments of the so-called "Egyptian Blue". For them, this color was considered the color of the universe and of life, hence the need to capture it in their sarcophagi and statues. The meaning of blue varies according to the environment and, furthermore, according to its shades. Generally speaking, blue represents stability. Navy blue is associated with depth, the order of the sacred, immortality and power. On the other hand, light blue is related to tranquility, protection, health, understanding and generosity. From these meanings many more emerge depending on the point of view or the context.

In the past, because the blue pigment came from lapis lazuli and was very expensive to obtain, its use revealed the purchasing power of the client who commissioned the work. Therefore, the color was associated with social distinction and nobility. Hence the importance of blue in heraldry. In addition, in the past it was said that the nobility had "blue blood". This is because the nobles, who delegated the work of the land to the subjects, were always sheltered from sunlight. Because of this, their skins were paler and the blue veins were more visible.
